My direction in painting has been a continuous attempt to explore the effect of light upon nature and, coinciding with my maturation, an attempt to capture on canvas the mystical qualities of light. I find the effect of light within clouds in the sky and its reflection upon the sea exciting. To use different shapes, different colors, values, and consistency of paint and to form these qualities into an illusion of movement and space and, perhaps, to touch upon an unseen dimension is part of that excitement.
I believe there exists in all people a desire to yield to, listen to, or deny a higher being. We are constantly looking for answers to explain the contradictions inherent in natural phenomena. The contradiction for me is that I look best within by looking out, at the sea and sky in their everchanging and overwhelming presence and at the moment when something seems to “come together.” I transpose my interior vision of these impressions, nature, and ideas on canvas. My seascapes and skyscapes are not quite real, nor are they unreal. Clouds, the sea, and the sky have an influence on people who live within these environs, an influence not limited to a geographic physical manner, nor an economic fashion, but spiritually and intuitively. We find influence generated by people and their ideas and expressions of the holy and the spiritual. It is in the narrow passage of unexplained awe about nature that I choose to convey these images hovering between the seen and unseen. I probe and explore that vague territory that exists between the two, seeking my answer to the paradox between reality and spirituality in the expression of my work.
